THE people of Northumberland turned out in force for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Olympic Torch. Huge crowds lined the streets of Berwick, Bamburgh and Alnwick to see a piece of history wind its way through their communities.

The three settlements each laid on spectacular welcomes for the flame, including last night a magical celebration in the shadow of Alnwick Castle which some 12,000 people enjoyed. At Bamburgh, villagers had a day of activities to mark the special occasion. There was street entertainment, school sports, cricket and a hog roast.

The village also hosted a ‘Torches of Inspiration’ exhibition displaying past flames and evening entertainment. At the Alnwick event, revellers were treated to a spectacle of music and theatre.

There was live music from Tyneside indie rock band Little Comets, stunning acrobatic displays and dance performances. There was also local-themed entertainment, celebrating the county.
